Re: Torque spec
Yeah! At 165 ft/lbs, you don't even need a troque wrench! It is tight as hell :lolno: Yeah, I've got Rob and Dave's torque list, but not knowing what this bolt was called... so I guess that's the one called "Transmission Carrier Bolt". Makes sense, but not obvious. Anyway, thanks for point...

Torque spec
I'm looking for the torque spec of this bolt as you see on this pic, framed by the red star. IMG_20220717_160804331___.jpg Just to set the context in case in wouldn't be obvious, that bolt is at the end of that shaft pointed at by the green arrow, which goes straight to the torsion bar. One on each ...

Water Temperature Gage
Does anybody else have a water temperature gage for their air cooled engine?
If so, what water system are we looking at?
Either my gage is not working or my water system has an issue, because my gage is not showing any sign of life while I'm driving
Thanks!
Dan

Re: Distributor swap
I've got the Blue Bosch coil here, and it's brand new from last year. Yes, the resistance of the primary circuit would start between 50 and 100 when I'd put the probes on the terminals, and then would climb up to a few hundreds, drop back down, go back up again, and so on. I ordered a new one yester...

Re: Distributor swap
So this is what I verified: The starter cable is connected to the battery positive terminal, which I guess is an indication that the battery is connected correctly. Terminal 15 of the distributor is giving me a +12v reading on the multimeter. With a neighbour turning the ignition key, I did not get ...

Re: Distributor swap
With the new distributor finally sitting in and making sure all 5 cables are firmly pushed in at both ends, I sat behind the wheel with my heart pounding and turned the key... again and again... So there's fuel going up, 'cause I can smell it, but there's no sound of fire whatsoever. So now I'm usin...

Distributor swap
So I got my new EMPI distributor in the mail today, and decided to give it a go. My old distributor only has one cable going to terminal 15 on the coil. My new distributor has two cables (a black and a red). What do I do? So I searched my service manual, and discovered that everything that is suppos...

Re: 1968 Beetle engine refuses to start
I remember clearly that when it died on me there was no overheating smell. The compression was checked by a mechanic as part of a pre-purchase check, less than 500 miles before it died, and all cylinders were fine, with one being slightly lower than the other 3. But I'll get myself a kit and will de...

1968 Beetle engine refuses to start
1968 1500cc beetle engine. Engine will not start. Battery is energetic and the starter make the crankshaft turn and sounds healthy. Solex H30/31 was taken apart, checked and cleaned up. Coil was replaced as the primary circuit was burned out. Spark plugs were replaced and gapped. Fuel pressure is sl...

Re: Engine code prefixe "OH"
I agree with you about the season mileage! Here up north (not much more north than you) the buggy (or motorbike) season is kind of short unfortunately! Good to know that there is another relief system to compensate for the (unfortunate) aesthetic change of the valve covers that was done. No, I'm no ...

Re: Engine code prefixe "OH"
So going back to those valve covers, if I understand correctly, my beetle has no chance to burp since it has those 'high performance' covers, and most likely no crankcase relief valve drilled in. That can't be good, since the German engineers saw those burps coming and developed a mitigation device,...

Re: Engine code prefixe "OH"
Thanks for the cip1 site, Mike! I ordered my parts from them, including the axle boots. Thanks lastmanx for all that info! You guys rock! I did change the transmission oil already though, since I did not need to wait for any gaskets. About the right quantity came out. Except for this being a slow pr...

Re: Engine code prefixe "OH"
It turns out there is no such thing as an engine code starting with 'OH' (as you well know, but I didn't). After cleaning with a metal brush, the 'O' turned into a 'VW' logo (http://danielbolduc.fastmail.com/vw/). I'm relieved to finally know for sure what's pushing my car! Thanks for the tip! And t...

Re: Engine code prefixe "OH"
Thanks to both of you for the quick feedback! I'm currently reading the John Muir book. Very interesting indeed! I have many years of motocycle maintenance, but this Beetle is new territory to me. I don't intend to change anything on this engine, at least until something blows up in my face, but rig...
