Re: Just gotta be sure
I guess I have been taken out of context regarding my last post, as I am not ignoring advice, just getting two different versions on how to do this. With that said, it appears the general consensus is to mate from the top, which I am going to do. Thank you lastmanx and others who have pitched in on ...

Re: Just gotta be sure
Ya know guys, being a newby to this, I am trying to get advice/opinions as to the best way to rebuild this thing. As you can see, I have posted looking for the correct way to re-weld the tunnel cut after doing repair and re-measuring. Certainly, it can be a little confusing, hence the thread. Proble...

Re: Just gotta be sure
sorry I didn't mean to scold you. from your photo it appeared you were still hung up on the floor edge as a reference point, and I wanted to get that out of your mind. Lastmanx, I needed scolding as I WAS still hung up on the pan mounting ledges not lining up. I'm really anal and it still bothers me...

Re: Just gotta be sure
stop trying to line up were floor attaches. I feel like I was just scolded by my Dad! Ok lastmanx (and everybody else), tonight I did line up using the top and sides of the tunnel. It will not require much hammering (surprise right!?) to get it lined up. I was able to mate up the cut a litt...

Re: Just gotta be sure
Hi JJ,
Can you tell me why, if the chassis half is level, why would I need to raise the horns some?
Thanks

Just gotta be sure
Hello All, I am just about ready to start welding the chassis back together. For those of you that have not followed this repair, please see "Need Advice on a Frustrating build" and "Fix Before Somebody gets Killed". I have asked this before, but for some reason it is not sinking...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Hello Lastmanx, Oh yeah, new floors are going in. I bought the less expensive ones, and I bought halves just for the reason you suggested. They will overlap each other which should make welding them together a little easier. And hopefully, as you stated, give a little more support. I already have so...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Hello Last, You are right about things fitting fairly well. After I cut the thing in half, then leveled it out, the tunnel lined up ok along with the pan ledges (for lack of a better term). However, I think I will have some gaps to deal with from the original cut. It looks as if I may have to add me...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Lastmanx, Thanks for your advice. The thing I'm referring to though, is with the 14"+ taken out of the chassis, the tunnel openings where it was cut will not line up. So I am asking, should the bottom tunnel flanges, the lips the floor pan attaches to, be horizontal to one another so the pan ca...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Hello All, Just had a couple more questions before I start measuring and welding. First, when putting the two halves back together, may I presume that the bottom tunnel flange that the floor pans rest on and attach to, should be aligned as well as possible so the floor pans will have a level surface...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Thank you lastmanx for the tips. I will use them during the build. BTW, I am trying to locate the Hot VW mag you referenced. Could you be referring to the March 2002 issue?

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
Just a quick question......
I got the chassis in two halves,
I get measuring front to back and "X" from the front and back shock towers to get things straight. My question is where do I check the two halves for levelness?

Re: Mazda Seats
I have a set of Mazda RX7 Turbo II seats that I plan to use. The Miata seats in my daughter's Miata are very similar. Both of these two sports cars have very low roof lines and therefor the seats and the sliders, etc sit very low in the car. I think they would be good choices to avoid a body lift. ...

Re: Need Advice on a Frustrating Build
I have this question posted in The Samba as well, and got this reply that looks like it might work: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=7850943#7850943 I just checked the underside of the tunnel, and I now know how this thing didn't just fall apart. There is about a 15" long piece ...

Paint vs Powdercoat
Hello All, Well, the title just about says it all. I have the ability to do powdercoating on smaller items, but am concerned which ones would be better off painting. As an example, the torsion plates on a swing axle. Due to them taking so much torque, and constantly moving, would painting be better ...
