Bob, I've hunted down enough of these to know that they do fade over time. Of the last four I found, two of them looked like the volvos that they came from must have just had new master cylinders installed! Roger must have gotten one of the new ones I found.(unless he does have a really good method for cleaning them). I cleaned the one on my buggy and got it clean, but not new clean. The one I'm sending out to you looks brand new! :2cents: :hello:

Thanks Rick, I was just curious, and was asked by another buggy guy, what was the best way to clean an old plastic brake reservoir without making it brittle or melting it. So I decided to see what the rest of the "experts" had decided was proper. LOL Thanks again for the help on the reservoir/s! Bob

Brake Reservoir Cleaning FYI

Post by Classic-Manx-71 »

Bob, the outside of the reservoir cleaned up easy with hot soap water, but the inside had a dark residue where brake fluid had sat for a long time. As you know, the reservoir has two compartments. I was able to clean the compartment under the cap with my finger and hot soapy water and some degreaser. The second compartment posed a real challenge with only a small slit opening from the first compartment and the nipple at the bottom. We had first tried to clean the second compartment by sloshing cleaners in it with no real success. My wife solved this problem by using an old aquarium flex brush, small strips of cloth, tweezers (to remove strips) and HSW/degreaser entering and removing same through the nipple opening. It took time, a lot of sloshing and manipulating the brush, but we were both amazed at how clean we got it. See pic below for the "super-sophisticated" tools we used. Sorry, no pic of the HSW. Come to think of it, I did use the brush some on the first compartment. Hope this helps. Roger. PS: I guess stating "just cleaned it" was a little understatement. Sorry. Good luck! Image

I made a trip to the auto dismantler today to get the last of the volvo resevoirs. I think curiosity finally got to the guy behind the window..... he looked at me and asked (HOW MANY OF THESE CARS DO YOU HAVE????) LOL!! So Bob, I'll have yours boxed and shipped this monday, and If anyone else is in need of one, e-mail me and if I have any left, I'll help you out. :D :hello:

Rick, They are probably trying to figure out if they should raise the price if you keep asking for more of them. So did you tell him that you are a Volvo brake reservoir collector and that you just need a few more to complete your collection? LOL Thanks for taking your time to liberate the Volvo parts. I will put them to good use. I will be waiting for the postman with my package from Sweden. Thanks, Bob
