Why are there no runs in Southern California? the closest is Big Bear, you miss that one and its another year wait
the one a few years ago east of Julian was a lot of fun. and a lot of members showed up
Are there not enough members here or is it too far for most people

why no southern california runs
Hi Chuck,
We do try and hold two southern and two northern runs in California each year. In 2011, we'll be starting with Calico (south), then Kernville (central), Big Bear (south), and Mammoth (north). These are what I guess you'd call the "official" club runs that feature catered dinners, full hook-up camping, show 'n shines and prize drawings. The reason we seem fixated on certain cities is because we've found facilities that can accommodate up to 200 buggies and the surrounding terrain offers accessibility to enough driving challenges for up to five different runs.
Many of our members, however, host and lead informal runs. So many are held each each year that you can typically participate in a run of some sort almost every month of the year. ln 2010, there have been member-led runs in Clear Lake, Death Valley, Panamint Springs, Borrego, Ojai, Santa Paula, Mojave, Red Rock, and most recently, the Santa Paula Christmas Parade. These runs are usually much more relaxed with maybe five to fifteen buggies participating. There's no catered dinners or prizes, and the campsites may be a bit primitive, but what's lacking in frills is more than made up in the quality of the run . . . the runs are usually much longer with less stops since breakdowns are much less frequent. And, you have the opprtunity to become better acquainted with your fellow club members.
Keep an eye on the events calendar and look for announcements from individuals. I think you'll agree the small runs are a lot of fun. And, feel free to organize your own. If you announce it, they will come

Some of the informal runs are not always posted here. Depending on what kind of run you want to go on there are some other sites that post a run.
These runs are with friends and are run what you brung. So you may see other vehicles, such as Baja Bugs, Things, sand rails, small 4x4s and others.
Next month I am going on a run with friends that last 3days and you stay at a different place each night. It is in the southern Cali/Nev desert. Some of my friends have been doing this for many years now.
And at one place we stay at there is a small memorial to our fellow buggy enthusiast that have passed on.

In addition to the Manx Club, I go out with the RBC Buggy Club, DSB (Dual Sport Buggy) Club and the SoCal Baja Club. They each have informative websites, lots of outings and friendly people.
