SDS EFI Installation

Post by buggymancan »

Anybody have experience with the SDS fuel injection system? I am looking for imput concerning the basic fuel system requirements, ie pump, secondary tank, etc. Any input will be appriciated. I hear the CB performance system is another alternative? I have a a type 4, 2475 motor.

I've got an SDS System in a type IV 2270CC engine from Jake Raby at Aircooled Technology. Have not fired it up yet, but it's very straightfoward in it design. 1. A "tee"fitting from CB performance for the fuel tank. 2. A good electric fuel pump Mallory) 3. A Couple of good fuel filters (I'm using Mallorys) 4. A fuel regulator also a (Mallory) 5. A return line to the tank And it's ready to go!!! Jake built the engine and tuned the system for me. He might help you out on some of your questions.....http://www.aircooledtechnology.com or try his forum.....http://forums.aircooledtechnology.com check out my site.....http://users.adelphia.net./~jpboyton/ you can see both the pump and the primary filter

Yes, I have the exact system from Jake Raby, who also built my Type IV motor. We tried programing the system yesterday, but have had no success getting rid of a flat hesitation off idle and at higher rpms, which makes me wonder if we need a secondary fuel pump per the SDS diagram? We are using a Mallory 60 psi pump, (2) filters, return line pressure regulator, exactly as you describe, although the SDS booklet suggests a seondary pump. We are getting a constant 35 psi fuel pressure so what to do next? I find the SDS documentation to be woefully inadaquate, as it has poor instruction and no recommended setting or step- by- step guide to programming.

SDS System

You got one hell of an engine from Aircooled Tech. Didn't realize we both have one special powerhouse.... If Jake built your engine, it should have several hours of running time on his dyno! I can't believe he didn't work out all the bugs in the system. Man, I'd be calling him tonight to work out all your bugs, and questions....... Jon Proud owner of a 2270 cc TYPE IV Raby engine

One more thought just crossed my mind. Are your fuel lines big enough to supply the needs of your system? I recall thet they need to be at least 6AN or larger for the system to operate. Your two problem flat spots sound like fuel starvation. Just off idle, then again at high RPMs. Jon

Thanks for the input. I have unfortunately spent now $$ and weeks and weeks with another VW shop trying to get this system to function properly. It runs now a little better, but is currently fowling plugs and upon restarting only runs on (3) cylinders, and is therfore undriveable. As far as the fuel line I think I have an adaquate size, it is braided stainless approximately 1/2" in diameter? As I mentioned, the SDS literature and troubleshooting guide lacks an meaningfull setting recommendations and is really of no help. At this point, I am inclinded to go to traditional carbs and scrap the SDS EFI System, as no one seems to be able to get it to function properly, and the car has now been parked for a month or more as a result. Any additional recommendation on carbs, alternate EFI system, etc. would be appriciated.

Where are you located? You need to find a good tuner shop (Ricers) to tune your EFI. VW shops never had programmable EFI to tune.

I am running the CB system and have done so for a while. I am down the mountain from you in the Bay Area but I have a guy who really knows his stuff so let me know and I can put you in contact with him I have had no problems on the set up from the beginning. I love my system since I go from sea level to altitude quite often There is a lot to it. My system has a fuel pressure of 60 lbs and is adjusted on a fuel reg switch on one of the carbs which needs an 80Lb pump Your injectors should be calibrated for your size motor Dual Tanks the problem is the dual tank switch. Manual switch for dual tanks you will have no problem but for an electronic one I have only been able to find one that will work. It is on a Ford/GM dual tank switch that has a 65 lb capacity. The lesser ones blow right through and will drain one tanks and fill the other in a snap. You run out of gas with a full tank. Gene C #729

Gene, Yes, I can use the name and contact info. for your EFI man. I would like to contact him and perhaps just switch over to the CB system, or worse case back to carbs. Thanks, Ken # 1625

I know that is original post is quite old. I hope that you have gotten all your EFI issues worked out. If you haven't, you might want to check out the Megasuirt System. www.msefi.com While you might not want to go the full length of buying, building, and installing a complete new system, there is extensive information available there that may help you understand the system that you are trouble shooting. It may give you a better clue as to why you are not getting the smooth acceleration that you are looking for. Good Luck

Gene has been posting updates on the RBC site about the new CB injection system he put on his buggy. Its something I'd like to get someday, but not something I'd like to be first in line with. I really appreciate him sharing. http://rbcdunebuggy.yuku.com/topic/2002/t/Fuel-Injection.html?page=1
