Manx Mania
Manx Mania
Latest edition of Manx Mania is in the mail. Some of us should already have it in their mailbox.
The Volume IX, No. 3 issue of Manx Mania that most members hopefully have in hand by now will be the last one edited, published, mailed and largely written by Winnie and Bruce. Hats off and many thanks for the job they've done putting out a newsletter over the past 14 years. As Mel said in his recent update, I along with BobK and his wife have volunteered to put out the newsletter. I just spoke to Winnie and she suggested now is time to start working on the next issue. I'd like to see the newsletter continue as it always has been, with a good mix of technical articles, event reports, and personal stories, plus articles on Meyers Manx history, combined with informative articles on all the other brands and varieties of buggies which keeps our hobby fresh and interesting. One of the first changes to the new club's By-Laws is that even though they have always been welcome on Club Runs, the club is now including vintage production metal bodied buggies such as the Burro and the Sportser. I hope to have something in the next issue reflecting the change. I also hope to have the full story (hinted at in the current issue) on how the famous dune buggy historian and sleuth from the bayous Richard Brown, was able to track down the original #10 race Manx, the Meyers Manx that won the inaugural Mexican(Baja) 1000 in 1967. However, the point of this message is an appeal for articles and materiel. If you have something you'd like to submit for future issues of Manx Mania, please send me an email. Thanks, Nelson
I see now in the bylaws that the change regarding vintage metal bodied buggies didn't make the final cut and to be a board member or life member, possession of a fiberglass buggy is required. Regardless, I'm still looking to have an article along that line in the first issue. I also see in section D1c, the club is called the Horseless Carriage Club. Maybe a tailless cat but not a horseless carriage.

I enjoyed the article about the #10 recreation. I just wish it was longer. When I saw the first pictures of it (I think it was here) I was thinking "thats pretty neat." I never would have thought that much work went into making it accurate. The airplane landing light, the tires, the upholstery shop, etc. all pretty cool information that I would have never considered went into the build. I can't wait to hear how Richard actually found the actual #10.

Nelson, As you take over the newsletter responsibility, have you considered publishing it as a .pdf document? There are a number of advantages: 1) cost savings if you don't have to mail it. 2) everyone gets it at the same time. 3) color pictures are possible. 4) you can include web links to other material, sites, references, etc. The list goes on..... I think you open up a lot more possibilities by going to an electronic version of the newsletter. If people want the hard copy version, they will have the ability to print it at home. Thanks, Bud

Thanks, Bud
Bud, I've spoken to Winnie about that and she assures me that many, (if not most) of the Manx Club members either don't use computers or don't visit the club webpage. The time the newsletter was posted on-line worked well. Once the newsletter is mailed, if the webmaster can post it so only members can read it, that would be fine. I like your idea about color pictures.

Thanks, Bud
Bud, As a result of your posting, the transition group has considered and agreed to post the Manx Mania newsletter on the website starting with the next issue. We have also discussed this with Bruce and Winnie, who published all Manx Mania issues up to now and they agree that all back issues can also be posted on the webpage. Each member will still receive a printed copy of the newsletter. Membership and webpage records show that only 1/3 of the current members have ever registered on the Manx Club webpage. The printed newsletter will continue to be printed in black and white. However, starting with the next issue, the version on the webpage will be in color with higher quality photos. The newsletters will be viewable in a members only section of the webpage. We'll be working with the webmaster to make this happen. Thanks for your suggestion.
Nelson, That's great news and very good start to listening to club member suggestions. I am looking forward to the color photos. Also, it will be great to have the old newsletters available. Thanks, Bud

if it wouldn't be too complicated some money may be able to be saved by having an option to not recieve the newsletter if it is available online. oresonally I would be good with just the .PDF. and it being in color and all I wowuld rather just print that one out for myself anyhow. might be worth consideration if enough people are good with that?
