East Coast Event?

Tom will prpbably not be home until around September 22 or 23.
He is doing some shopping for large items for his new buggy, and then driving the van back to the east coast.
I would expect him to take about 4 to 5 days just to make the drive.
All the driving will happen after he & Kathleen do their tourist thing at some of the various national parks in the western part of the country.

Louis, I bet he would welcome the company if you could fly out & help him drive back.  That way you could get all of his ideas a week earlier.

East Coast Event?

Yup, it is getting mukky here!  I am still on the road, currently in Newport Beach CA.  We had a surprise turn of events.  When we stopped in at Outfront to show them the revised computer program for the Subi engine, they asked if they could use the Manxter  at the Sand Sports show in their booth.  It will cost me an extra day or 2 before I get home, but we couldn't resist.

I talked to Bruce about the east coast show.  If he gets invited back to Carlise, it should be there.  I will tell the Carlise Events people that if they invite him back, we will try to get more buggies there than this year.  If that doesn't happen, I will come up with something else, and he said he would try to make it there.  I will keep the information coming as I get it.  Tom

East coast events has bee a discussion amongst the board for a while
but the comon denominator is for members to step up and help out.
We do get a lot of why don't you do this or that but there are only so many of us
So if you have a idea, organize it and post it.
"Build it and they will come"
All runs/events do not have to be a full blown ManxClub event with he show & Shine etc
but rather fun runs with 2-12 buggys for example
Those are the runs that generate some great stories and pictures like Bruce did in Baja.

Hi Gene,

I agree with you which is why I posted this thread and then volunteered to help out when I heard Tom was going to organize something. I don't want to duplicate his work but I have organized events before and would be willing to put something together.

I am having discussions with the good folks at Carlisle Events about the Import & Kit Car show for 2011.  If they invite Bruce & Winnie back, I would plan to have the east coast event there.  If that doesn't happen, we will plan something else, or something could be planned in addition to Carlisle.  Tom

Hi Tom,

The Carlisle event sounds like it would be a great venue but I was thinking something more centrally located so it would be easier for members from the Southern states to attend. I think I will see if there is some interest in a Fall cruise or gathering in the NC/Virgina/Tenn area independent from your efforts.

Thanks,

If I did a stand alone event, I had thoughts of Skyline Drive in Virginia, possibly in conjunction with the nearby Manassas VW show in May or September.  More central, but nice scenery.   But, some people had a problem with an event on a holiday weekend (and some didn't).  I guess you can't please everyone & "if you build (have) it, they will come", to quote a movie line.  But something will happen, one way or the other.  Thanks for your input.  Tom

Skyline drive is nice and you have the camp grounds in Shenandoah to camp it. It would be a good option plus other things to do during the day. Maybe arrive Friday at one of the camp grounds, do a Sat morning drive to the other end, some afternoon activities, a pot luck bonfire, and then Sunday people could go do what ever they wanted.

East Coast Event?

Post by surfnc »

Just renewed my membership and would like to help out with an East Coast event!!

I live on the Outer Banks of NC and work for a realty company so I could help with reasonable lodging.

Here is a link to a historic inn that has lots of parking and a great "lawn" to setup buggies possible vendors etc.(Located in Nags Head NC)
http://www.firstcolonyinn.com/

Here is a link to another place that a buddy of mine owns that could take care of us if it was smaller.(Located in Manteo NC 5 miles from Nags Head)
http://www.theislandmotel.com/roomlist.php

Here is a restaurant/brewery that friends of mine own that has a big meeting room that we could have lunch/dinner at.  It also has a big parking lot that would hold a bunch of buggies.

If it turned out to be smaller we could stay at my parents beach house in Corolla NC and have another house or 2 if needed.  I take care of the pools at the other properties and the owners would most likely rent them to us very reasonably.

If it happened in the spring near St Patrick's day we could all be in the First Flight Cruisers car show and
then be in the Kelly's St Patrick's parade. If we could get Bruce to come (he said he would like to when I talked to him at Carlisle this May) I am sure I could arrange for complimentary lodging for he and Winnie.

If this happened near the Carlisle show and Bruce was there I could pick him up at the airport (Norfolk VA) bring him down then drive him up to the Carlisle show.

If it was in the Fall I could also pick him up and bring him down.  Spring and Fall are very
reasonable here and there are plenty of places open.  We could definitely drive on the beach in Corolla (30 miles N of Nags Head) or take a cruise down to the Hatteras area.

I spoke with Tom some and from that conversation it looks like there will be an east coast event. Tom is waiting to hear from the Carlisle folks to see if they will invite Bruce back. If it is a yes, then that will be the event. If not we talked of doing one possibly in VA. I have been exploring that possibility as an alternative should Carlisle not work out.

Personally I would prefer the fall but that is more for the selfish reason of trying to get my buggy done in time to attend. :D (Plus Carlisle is too far for me to attend.) Of course we could always do Carlisle in the spring and something else in VA or NC in the fall if folks are willing to help out.

PS: My CYA statement. I am just someone willing to volunteer and in no way speak for the Manx Club.

East Coast Event?

I am glad to see all of the talk about an east coast event in 2011.  The Outer Banks would be great I think, if it was not the summer season, to cut some of the crowds & lodging costs.

I have been e-mailing Ed B. from Carlisle Events about the Carlisle Import & Kit Car show next year.  After having Bruce there for the last 3 years, it is not likely they will have him next year, but that has not been decided yet.  Ed still wants to talk about how we could still have an event there, even without Bruce.  The problem is that it would not be a stand alone Manx Club event, and we have to keep all of the buggy people that would attend happy.  I tried to do that this year, and I think it worked, but I can't call what happened a real Manx Club event.  Of course, there is nothing saying we couldn't have more than one event next year, after all, they have at least 4 on the west coast every year.

So lets keep the discussion going, something(s) will happen.  Thanks!  Tom

I would really like to see a Manx Club only event like they do out west. Honestly, other than the newsletter and this forum, as an east coaster there is not much incentive to being a Manx Club member right now. I have heard the same from other former members in the area. Couldn't we have a club display and parking area for the Carlisle event in the spring and then plan a separate Manx Club only event in the fall? Carlisle would not require that much planning and effort so as not to overburden the volunteers (and Tom).
