Im new to this buggy fatuation, im just courious what the big deal is with having a Manx made body??? Are they that rare? better built? more valueable? Look nicer? etc. put it this way, is the manx something your just paying for a name that everyone else uses, like Vise Grip Plyers, instead of Locking plyers, Or Channel lock plyers instead of Slip joint Plyers. etc. i think you know what i mean. I quess my question is if you have a clone, that looks just as good as a Manx, how much more is the manx worth? Just because of the name.

the reason a myers is worth more is it is the original. There are a lot less of them so they are more rare. I don't know if they are better built or not but I would assume they are at least on the top end of quality if not the best. They don't look any nicer in my opinion. you can find a clone that is the exact same as an original myers for fairly cheep if your willing to wait. So the question you have to ask yourself is. Do I want something that is worth more because it is an original or do I just want a cool buggy that I love just as much that was a little cheaper to build.

Well, in my opinion... you can have FUN, FUN, FUN, in any buggy. However, for me, it's owning a part of history, as the whole fiberglass buggy thing started with the Manx. I believe it is better built, stronger, thicker and a pretty neat design. A bit over 5000 Manxes were created and several hundred thousand other makes (the Manx was "cloned" by many, not to mention all the other unique designs). I had a Manx way back in '68, and I wanted another one, even if the one that I 'found' (or the one that found me) was a real project with a zillion holes and other needed repairs. Having said that, I've already got my 2nd VW pan and the body for this one will probably not be a Manx, don't know what it will be, but, I'll know it, when I see it (maybe new, maybe old, maybe another project).

Ok i can relate to that, but what do you look for to determine that it is and original? do they have a tag or stamp somewhere?

There are a few clones that are as good or higher quality than a Manx. But a Manx is the original and has better collector/resale value, if flipping a buggy is important to you. Use the link below to get all the info you need to determine if a buggy is a 'Real' manx. Is my buggy a Real Manx?

One more little consideration which will vary on your situation. A Manx was the only buggy I could convince my collectors insurance company to put collectors coverage on. They dont insure buggies but due to the heritage associated with Manx being the first and original they made an exception.

JThw8, Which collector insurance were you able to insure your ManX with? Thanks

I was able to insure through ACI (American Collectors) Now a few caveats. As a rule they wont insure a buggy, Manx or not. I spent alot of time with the underwriter, pleading my case and because I had other collectors insured with them they did finally make an exception for me. So dont think you can call them up and just get coverage, be prepared to cite and document the historical significance of a Manx. They also had me cite every event I would be attending over the next year with the buggy as a way to judge its usage and they will only cover 15/30 on liability not 100/300 which is what I usually carry. By way of documentation I provided them with the email Winnie sent authenticating my car (and followed up with the actual authentication documents once I received them) As well as any articles I could find on the history of the Manx to validate its historical significance. Also they will insure it under their modified car program not their collector car but the rates are the same. It was overall the largest pain the the butt I have ever had to deal with and I came close to selling the Manx because of it. Of course now that its done I will never get rid of it because I never want to have to go through the process again ;)
