Pics of the proccess. feedback??

Post by jr_vw2 »

here is where im at so far. I just ordered tires for the weld wheels. rear 295/50R15 fronts 190/50R15. It is ready for paint I am going with a bright metalic orange with a little pearl in it. Still need to put carpet in it. 90% of everything that on the buggy is new. I have narrowed and lowered the front beam. 3in adj. and 2in narowed. Engine is fresh rebuild with only break in time on it, has not been run witht his exhaust on it yet. I have rebuilt the trans. and put a richmond ring and pinon in it. Stage II clutch from Kennedy. Billet Alu. roller gas peddal. The pan has been all the way to bare mettal with new floor pans installed. As it is right now I have a little more than 300 hours in it and I quit keeping track of the $$. Man I cant wait to get it done.:driving: Just wanted to get some feedback and see what you guys think of it. thanks. by the way if anyone is interested in the wheels that are on it I will be getting rid of them they are 14's Jeremy Chattanooga, TN

Jeremy, Looks great, keep moving towards having it hit the street and then the dirt! Where did the steering column brace come from thats under your dash? Did you make it or buy it? any closer pics of that brace? Thanks, Bob

I made the brace out of a piece of fence post I had around and two pieces of plate steel. I used just a dime a dozen GM column. Jeremy Chattanooga, TN

Mine is far away from finished, just ordered the fiber body to be made from a guy localy that has all the molds, my body has the same fender lines but the hood has a center fin... toward the back of the fin ill make a 20" scoop with mesh, flows from front to back near the wind shield. Hood will be on hinges so it opens towards the front, dash and all, wires extended. Windshield will be swept back as much as I can with short alum brackets and very short acrily pane. no frame around it. no roll bar! just finished today buying all the new bushings/ball joints and bearings you can imagine for the pan/suspension all urethane. Also have to weld in the front end adjusters for the full 4" drop. After I fit the body and cut/weld the pan its going to bear metal/sandblasting etc etc etc. You know how it goes! Engine and trans is another long story... no rush centerline wheels...expensive.... Ah and the best part, the mold guy is an artist he's designing the side scoops (three concave scoops on each side) for his own buggy, those like the ferraris have with the fins behind the doors and scoops that flow into engine,,,just told him that ill order a pair when he has finished/perfected these new molds, for myself. uff killer, saw a buggy on hot vw mag rear section with these,,,**** looks bad.

Looks awesome. I wish I would have went with the weld wheels as I would have been able to get the back space I wanted. I like the column brace idea too, as I dont think you will be able to see the braces with the hood mounted. It is going to be a sweet buggy when done!!! Are you putting side pods on it??? MURZ

Hi JR VW2! Very nice buggy so far! Here's a tip I learned from an auto painter years ago... When doing a metallic paint job (not metalflake) the paint is somewhat transparent. The first 2 coats can show the primer color underneath. Even if you don't do the basecoat/clearcoat treatment on your car, you can get almost the same results as a candy paint job without the candy paint cost. I took his advice when painting my beetle back in '84. After the primer was done, I shot it with 2 coats of gold metallic paint. This was the same brand as the final lime green and jade green that I was going to do the two-tone paint job when finished. When the gold was dried, I color sanded the whole thing and made sure everything was super smooth. I used Centauri DuPont acrylic enamel. From there, I gave it a mist coat of each green first, and followed up with the heavy 2nd coat of each green. Next went a coat of clear with gold Micro-Sequins and gold pearl. Again color-sanded when it dried and finally sprayed the last two coats of clear (without any pearl). The final result was awesome. It was green during the daytime, gold at night, and changed from gold to green when I would drive under a streetlamp at night. Whenever I took a flash picture of the car, the gold would show up in the areas that were parallel to the camera lens, all the other rounded-off spots would be green. I miss that car! Good luck! John

I cant make up my mind about side pods or not. I have seen them look just awesome on some buggies and look retarded on others.
