Best place to mount an oil cooler

Post by jr_vw2 »

Where are you guys putting oil coolers on a manx style buggy? I was thinking of putting one on what would be the bottom of the rear seat, but im concerned with it not getting enough air flow. If it doesnt have enough air flow it doesnt work as well as it could. I am running a deep sum oil pan and a spin on oil filter. Do I really even need to run an oil cooler? I am concerned because I have had a Bettle over heat on me once before. I know it will run cooler than a standard bug anyway just because it is all open. Just want to gather your ideas thanks. Were you using a dog house oil cooler/fan/shroud or the earlier style. The dog house set up should be adequate for a non-racing engine unless you have an engine that runs hot for some reason. Engines that have excessively high compression or the timing is too far advanced at a given RPM will also run hotter. http://www.type2.com/library/cooling/oilcoole.htm

An oil cooler on the underside of the rear seat will work much better then nothing. A cooler with a thermostatic fan would be ideal.

I would also suggest using a thermostat controlled fan. I would also strongly suggest not mounting your cooler over the air intake hole for the fan shroud. It's really counter productive if you think about it. What kind of motor are you running? and what are you planning on using it for? With your deep sump and remote filter you might not need it at all.

I mounted mine under the rear seat with a thermostat, I also have a deep slump and oil filter. My fan has not even come on yet and who knows if it will ever need to..

I will be running a 1955cc and it will be street driven for long periods of time. It's going to be a cruiser.
