Stock head studs

How strong are the stock 1600 8mm head studs?? I am building a 1915 with an engle 110 cam 1.25:1 rockers 044 big valve heads (40mm X 35.5mm) and will be running dual 40mm carbs. My questions is this.... are the stock head studs going to be strong enough? Or should I go to a set of chromolly studs. Thanks guys.

I just bought a 1915 from a guy who builds them in calif he puts the c-moly says they are needed hope this helps mike

All the engines I build run with stock German VW studs. I am running my personal 1914 with stock VW studs and haven't had any problems. I don't think there are many people out there that abuse an engine much more then I do.

1914, 110 engle, stock dual port heads, stock rocker arms on heavy duty shaft, lightened flywheel, 009 with compufire, chromemoly pushrods, single Zenith 32 carburetor, AND stock 8mm studs. Never a problem. Have heard that the 8mm studs are preferable to the 10mm because they expand and contract at a closer rate to the case, cylinders, and heads.

Case savers are kind of like helicoils IN that they are solid threaded inserts that you put in your case so the studs are not threaded into straight aluminum.

The stock factory 8mm head studs worked great for most purposes. They expand and contract with the cylinders and heads. Using chromoly there is no expansion so cylinder starts cutting into case and head and head nuts come loose. Chromoly works for high compression short term (rebuilding after a race) engines.
