Shifter Sealing???????

Post by Gene-C »

I am getting ready to put my buggy on the Berrien chassis real soon. Since the chassis is open on the bottom I am concerned about dirt getting into the the cup on the end of the shift rod where the shifter goes in. I plan to have some belly pans, but that won't keep the dirt out. Grease will probably only make it worse. I have thought about a bicycle innertube or maybe a tie rod end boot. I can box the whole area in, but that will be a lot of work. Please let me know what you have done, pictures would be nice. I'm not above copying :help: If you think it's not a problem say so also. Buggy is mostly street driven but does have a tendency to swerve off the road. :D Thanks

I have been running a Berrien chassis with nothing covering the shifter/rod connection for 7 years and the buggy sees nothing but dunes. I have never had a problem with it. I do spray it with teflon once a year.

Thanks Jerry, The thought of all that sand grinding in my new shifter bothers me. I think I have it figured out. I will post pics when I get it done.
