Manx cast valve covers

Post by ralphdjeeper »

Hi all i purchased a set of the cast valve covers they came with 4 bolts, course threads,4 flat washers,4 rubber washers,4 long nuts, approx. 1". now my Question is how do you install them? I take off the spring clip that holds the old factory ones on then what? looking at the holes in the new covers it looks like they line up with the bolts that hold the rocker arm on,but they are fine thread bolts and i think that would not work, you would have to replace the bolt with a stud, fine thread on one end and course on the other along with a fine nut to bolt the rocker arm on tight and then a course nut to hold the valve cover on? anyone who has the answer please post or e-mail me at res1w3c6@verizon.net thanks the crateman

The long nuts are called coupling nuts, and they are used to couple two threaded pieces together. The rockers are normally held on with studs, not bolts. The procedure to install bolt on valve covers is to remove the nuts that hold the rockers on and install the coupling nuts in their place. The bolts that came with the new valve covers should thread into the other end of the coupling nuts. The flat washers go under the bolt heads, and the rubber washers go under the flat washers (at least that's how the covers I installed went). If your rockers are installed with fine thread bolts, something is different. I seem to recall having a similar problem with the 40HP engine my first buggy had in it, but that was so long ago I can't remember the details. You might need to find some fine thread studs, coupling nuts, and bolts if your heads are tapped as such. Just be sure any replacement studs you use are hardened.
