Which Ignition system to run
Which Ignition system to run
I am trying to decide which ingnition system to run on my 1915. I am debating between an MSD system with billet Distributor 6AL ignition box (with revlimiter) and MSD 45,000v coil. OR a Pertronix Flame Thrower system with billet distributor and 45,000v coil. The pertronix system claims to have a microprocessor in it to eliminate the need of an ignition box. Has anyone ever ran either of these set ups on a vw engine before? If so let me konw what you thought of it good or bad. Or if anyone can give ups and downs of each that would be great. thanks
Ignition System
This past March, I installed a CompuFire DIS IX "distributorless" ignition system on the 1600cc in our Manx & I've been very pleased with its performance. Price-wise they sell for $185.00 to $225.00. You're suppose to gap your plugs to .055", but, for my application I like them better gapped at .045". The MSD system works great, but I couldn't justify the cost, around $450.00 for the distributor & the control box & wires. The D.U.I. "Davis Unified Ignition" sold by Performance Distributors works great too & everything is in one neat package! It's basically a GM HEI distributor. Very dependable & parts are easy to find. I'm thinking about buying one for the 1904cc I'm building for our 71 VW Bus. They were on sale for $285.00 a couple months ago, not sure now. Check their ad in HOTVWS. Have Fun, Fun, Fun... I run a Universal CDI module triggered by a Compufire points replacement module. All other ignition components are stock VW. If the CDI module fails, reversing the plug returns the system to standard ignition. If the Compufire module fails, I can install a set of points. The CDI module puts out 50,000 volts up to 10,000 RPM. Cost of the CDI module was around $100. http://www.universal-co.com/index.aspx
