Just how loud is a stinger??
After getting the wounderfull news that my barnd new exhaust system (that I bought and havent even used yet) will not fit with dual carbs. I am going to have to rethink my exhaust set up. I am most likely going to run a merged header. My question is this....just how loud are stinger pipes??? I know they make baffle inserts for them but I have never actually heard a stinger before. I dont want to run a muffler because I dont really like the way they look. Other than dual pipes I like the look of a merged header with a stinger best. If anyone can give me some insight i would love it. thanks

That's all me and my Gandfather ran out at the pismo dunes, it does sound mean all most as good as a V8 uncorked. But I have not run one on the streets. I run a Glasspack on the streets which sounds commer but still a lite mean.
I ran a merged header with a stinger several years ago on a sandrail I had. The stinger sounds decent, but it has considerable horse power loss with the baffle in. I only ran the baffle in town. On the highway, and off road it was balls out exhaust. I don`t know if they`ve improved over the years, but I went through several stingers, because they would break off at the base from vibration. I prefer the merged system with a U bend.
My first buggy was an off road only two seater rail with a 40HP engine. It had an open megaphone stinger, which was cool for about the first 10 minutes. I didn't do much with the exhaust the first couple months because I was busy getting the buggy's frame welded back up after breaking something every trip. When I upgraded the engine to a 1600 DP, I put on a new exhaust, still with open megaphone stinger. I got to the point where I couldn't take the noise anymore, so I installed a baffle. It was better, but still loud. Then the baffle started to rattle. Then the header pipes split open because of the weight of the baffle. I finally went with a Glass Pack SuperTrapp at the end of the U bend. The buggy was much more quiet (although still louder than a stock Bug), and I picked up quite a bit of power in acceleration as well. I never looked back. My Manx has the Manx Sidewinder exhaust with the end cut off the glass pack and a SuperTrapp TIG welded onto it. This is the quietest and smoothest setup I have had. An open stinger might have value in a high performance engine that lives close to redline most of its life, but all it seems to accomplish on a stock engine is to hurt your ears and wear on your nerves.
A stinger even with a baffle is too loud for the street, especially if you plan on driving it anywhere. It doesn't help that most of the time the stinger is sticking up in the air causing people to hear it even more. Here is a picture of a friends Desert Fox buggy, Note the merged exhaust with a fiberglass packed baffle in the stinger. It's an 1835 cc engine with a single 44idf Weber. It runs great and gets 15mpg. This is Tom's buggy now, running a "U" bend and a stainless SuperTrapp. The exhaust is tuneable for power and sound makes more power then it did with the stinger/megaphone and it is a pleasure to drive on the road. Oh did I mention, the fuel mileage went up to 19 mpg? My sister's buggy (Before) After: Can you pick out a trend?
I just dont really like the look of a u bend. I know its what everyone raves about and its what people are going to. I just dont like to "cover up" my engine I dont like to have all that exhaust in front of everytihng. Thats why i like dual pipes so much. And I love the "loud and proud" exhaust. I just dont want the 5-0 to love giveing me a ticket. I think the big advantage to a u-bend is that they don't take on water. plus when you point the sound waves toward the ground they seem a little quieter. The supertrap style still sounds good when you full throttle trough a tunnel. Kind of like a Japanese motorcycle..Plus you can take the spark arrester off when you go through the parade, or feel like pissing off the neighbors... .
