in one of the pics near the bottom- what is that strapped to the side of the buggy?
Those were called camping modules. They were fiberglass cargo carriers. One set down into the backseat and the other ones mounted on the side of the body. The one in the back seat had a door that hinged down flat and acted as a work surface.

The above pictured Camping Module Package, (rear and 2 sides), cost $168 in 1968!!! One can only wonder where those molds are today?
Image A buggy at Lone Pine had one
Where do you get a breather like that? Looks like it would keep the sand out...

Its an old Tri-phase air cleaner. They were very popular in the 60s, especially on racers.

Ah yes, the "French Buggy" (the yellow one in the pictures from Lone Pine). John Denmat & I took that car on the extreme run. Big mistake. It broke down on us 2 times and some other parts fell off. We only did about a 3rd of the run, but made it back in one piece & were able to help other people get back also. Not a bad day for some ex-Formula Vee Racers from New England! The box in the back was useful. The top was not hinged the way the old brochure shows, it opened up, not down. It also rattled a lot. The car "hangs out" in Valley Center waiting for the owners (from France) to return to the US and go an another adventure to Baja. Someone could probably borrow the box and make a mold off of it (with permission) and have another great Manx accessory. They better rebuild the engine before the next trip, it was "tired". John & I fixed some of the other problems after Lone Pine, But it could use more "work". Tom

Any implement dealer can get the Tri Phase air cleaner for you, My GrassHopper lawn mower has one the same size as the one on the "French Manx" and it's only a couple years old. It sure works great.
