Do you need the Volkswagen engine mount for a engine stand? I have two V8 engine stands (one expensive, one cheap), can I use the engine mount from one of these or do you need the Volkswagen one. Last time I rebuilt a VW it was on the garage floor.

I would think the floor might work better if you have to split the case???????????I have seen people use the remains of a transaxle for a stand. It can also hold a starter for compression testing etc.

You can buy an inexpensive benchtop engine stand and use the head in your regular engine stand. I can't see ever working on a VW engine on a bench, an engine stand makes it so much easier and quicker.

Thanks for the input. The problem with the bench type is the receiver pipe is smaller then the engine stands. They do have one with an adapter to make it fit. Guess I'm off to spend more money.

I have a 750 lb capacity Chicago engine stand (Harbor Freight cheap) with four adjustable mounting points. If adjusted correctly (about as small as it will go), it will fit a VW motor.

Thanks Bossman. My expensive one goes smaller then my cheap one. And since I just got rid of my 350 V8 it is available.
