Towd prices

Post by mel hubbard »

Guys, I've just been talking to a buggy guy in england who would like to get hold of a Towd for his next project, maybe for full restoration or one needing a little work. Anyone know what the going rate is for these? ,, just a rough idea will do, also, whats the score with the title on these? ... I'm also wondering what vehicle description is normally printed on the paper work of these type vehicles,,,, that info is needed due to the new crazy rules & regs here...

Dave, I think Sam had something in mind that needs working on. I remember Nelson posting one on here a while back, that he found someplace, it looked ripe for restoration. I never go on the samba, too many forums confuses the head!

There's one that looks like a runner on the Samba for $2K now in Idaho(has a hideous roll cage). That's probably about average. The problem I think he might have with a Tow'd is that the section on the tunnel that had the serial numbers is often cut off and even if its not, and it has a title, the numbers are under the body and can't be easily read. I think he'd have a job getting it past H.M. Customs. Probably the best way would be to possibly just find a cheap non-runner, disassemble it, leave the VW stuff and just crate and ship the Towd bits as parts.

If it was listed as some kind of buggy on the title rather than a sedan or beetle it maybe OK here. I think the custom papers that come into UK with the vehicle will show the vehicle details like make & VIN, or any number stamped to it that gives some kind of ID, these are then handed to VOSA once its been MOT tested,, after that they may want to inspect it, or if ya get luck they may just issue the new docs,, if really unlucky it will be an IVA test, which I don't think they would pass. Nothings as it used to be, more a kind of lucky dip, because they keep on making changes. At least I have a rough idea on what a resto project would cost, ?3000 shipped should cover it as long as he don't want flat 6 Corvair power I guess. At least I can give the guy some idea on a resto towd price now, Still, at least if I tell him he should get one shipped

Hi If it is any help I have just shipped my car from the US for $1200 (Houston to Felixstow) and got it registered with the DVLA without a problem. Car had title. No SVA test was required as it was already registerd in the US. Shipping was no problem and car was full of spares. Martin Corvairdunebuggy.com

Image
This was the Tow'd that I completely restored about a two years ago. I sold it to the gentleman that has it listed on the Samba. Does anyone know where it's going?
Hello SiggyManx#33, I'm the one who bought it. And that became also the trigger for me to (finally) join the Manx Club. Already in 2006 I almost decided to buy this Tow'd from the lady who owned it at the time. I believe it was her father who assembled it in 1970. At the time I was impressed how original it still was, and I particularly liked the softtop. Later I noticed the Tow'd again when you sold it. I was happy to see that the restoration had been done with respect. But at the time I had contacted you, it was already sold. Late December it found it for sale, on ebay, for an acceptable price and this time I decided it was my time to buy. I never saw your posts on this forum about the restoration untill this week. Unfortunately many pictures are gone, but it was very interesting to read through all of them. If you don't mind, I have some questions about the car. Is it OK when I pm?

Siggymanx, do you still have those Tow'd parts left over? I'd be interested in buying them.

Pat, I've tried to respond to you the few places that you asked me, albeit usually weeks after you've asked. Everything I had was installed or purchased with the buggy. The only thing I still have is the skidplate that I would like to see if we can get back on #1630. Sorry.
