San Rafael Towd's new shoes

Post by Scott-Drolet »

Here's some before and after pics of the new tires and wheels. I was going for an old school off road look, so I went with 30" Mickey Thompson Baja Pros on the rear, and Mini-Mags in the front.  Camber is maybe just a tad too positive, but I need to change out the spring plates to get the tires straight with the road anyway (too much toe out), so I'll fix it then.  I was afraid the tire height would lug the engine a bit, but actually it hasn't affected it as much as I thought it would . . .maybe because the tires are skinny and light.  Nothing like the 32x10.5x15's I'm running on the Burro.

Here's the before pics:

Thanks for the kind words you guys.  In another thread I was talking about going with my original four-lug Sprintstars, but the rear ones were 10 inches wide, and I really didn't want to go that big.  What it comes down to is the repo Sprintstars are so inexpensive ($80 bucks each) it simply doesn't make economic sense to put hundreds into restoring wheels that would be difficult to make look as good as these. Plus, they'll eventually be dinged up offroad.

I just wish they'd make them an inch or two wider, they only come in 5" width (not even 5-1/2 inch) which makes tire choice difficult.  I'm a little concerned about the Baja Pro because they have bold proclamations that the tire is not for highway use all over them.  But, if they turn out to work well offroad, I can always switch over to the Pirelli version of a very similar tread pattern which is DOT approved.  I just like the way the Baja Pro and Mini-Mag have the exact same tread patterns.
