The armrest lid lifts up for storage and the whole console entirely flips back out of the way if necessary too. If you look at the multi-piece construction of the item on Amazon, I only used one of the console bases to give it a little more height and mounted it on a finished 3/8 inch wood base screwed into the base so it is solid. The wood base was cut, sanded, painted to contour on the center frame over the VIN area. I used industrial strength 3M plastic velcro to adhere the base down. very solid, no drilling into the interior (trying to limit that anyway). The console doesn't lock, but adds a little storage and a nice armrest.
