Not sure about the rest of the country, but here in California at AUTOZONE & OREILLYS, you can get a VW automatic transaxle "self-supporting" starter, p/n 16300 for $34.99 / 16.00 core @ Autozone or $39.99 / 16.00 core @ O'Reilly's!!!
That's a fantastic price for such a great starter!!! You don't use the "starter bushing" that's in the bellhousing with it, because the starter's drive has a "self-supporting bearing"!!! They produce quite a bit more torque too!!!
Most places want $75.00 to over a $100.00 for these!!!
They are a really great replacement for the regular Type 1 starter!!!
***Note*** - Autozone had to order it (1 day) & O'Reilly had it in stock!!!***
