Good News & Bad News in Big Bear Lake

Post by Gene-C »

[font=Comic Sans MS]This was our very first Buggy event. [font=Comic Sans MS]The good news: The "green" buggy run to Holcomb Valley was spectacular. My fiance' and her parents joined me on the ride and it's the most fum any of us have had in a long time where we did not run the risk of arrest. Since we have a home up here in Big Bear, we now have a new, favorite excursion! The unexpected rain and even that little bit of hail was momentarily uncomfortable, but only added to a wonderful adventure. That hot shower and apple cider with spiced rum at the end of the day were perfect! Thanks to our leader and sweeper for a memorable experience... [font=Comic Sans MS]On the other hand, looking at those gorgeous buggies on Saturday morning has given me a whole list of improvements for my buggy and the incentive to finally complete my "perfect" buggy by next year. The bad news? It's gonna be REAL expensive!! :D

Big Bear was excellent! Since I can't figure out how to post my pics on this site any more, here is a link to my pics. http://www.manxgallery.org/gallery/album266 You can do the slideshow to view them all at one sitting. I will give details later as it is late.

OK, I'm back. Now here goes. We arrived early on Thursday at Holloway's (a few blocks away from Tanda). Thought we would see other buggies there already. Nope, we were the first ones in. So we set up camp and just relaxed. An hour or so later, Jimbo and Dick and Wendy arrived. A few others trickled in as the afternoon went by. We all had a relaxing evening. The next day, a bunch of us got together and did a run to the Butler Peak Fire Lookout. After an initial wrong turn, we found our way there. What a spectacular view (After a bit of a climb from the parking area)! You can see Big Bear and Arrowhead Lakes at the same time. We continued down to Green Valley Lake. We did this last year, and it was a beautiful run. Lots of trees, water crossings and a variety of road conditions to play on. The difference this year was that everywhere you went, there were hundreds of trees cut down and stacked, ready to be hauled away. These were trees killed by the bark beetle infestation. It was sad to see. Rumor has it that in 20 years, there will no longer be any pine trees there, only oaks and such  . Anyway, Just after Green Valley lake, we stopped for a quick lunch. As we started back, we found a nice water crossing and all did a Ken T. tribute as we drove through. We got about 8 miles out of Fawn Skin, and Dick and Wendy's alternator just fried! So Jimbo volunteered to tow them back. The hill just kept going up, and up, and up. I thought we were going to have to tow Jimbo back too after he overheated, but he made it to the top without a problem. We coasted back into town and stopped near the Fire Station. Jimbo drove back to camp to get his rigid tow bar. As the rest of us waited, a man walked up admiring the buggies and asking if we were having trouble. He offered us a wrench if needed. Then said he had air tools back at his garage if we wanted to come over. Turns out that his garage was just across the street. So we pushed it over. He rolled up the garage door, and to our suprise, he had a full work shop right there. He was a retired Caterpillar mechanic, and had all the tools you could possibly need. Good thing we found him, I mean he found us, since both nuts on the shaft were practically welded on! It took the air gun a minute to finally knock those bolts loose. So as we disassembled the back of the buggy and called to locate parts, he took Mel on a tour of his house, showing all the things he had built there by hand himself. He was very proud of his work. Jimbo returned and towed the buggy back to camp with no problem. Kevin and Regina had pulled into camp and several of us gathered around to help them replace a badly worn clutch cable. The next day, Jimbo and Dick went to pick up the new alternator. Of course, the place that said they could get one, got the wrong one, and the place that said they could try to match it up, had the right one. So they return triumphant and begin wrenching. I went to the driver's meeting, hearing rumors that this would be the last Big Bear run. Nothing said at the meeting. As the runs commensed, Dick was still working on installing the part. Several of us waited for him so he wouldn't get left out of a run. By the time everything was done. Around 11:30, we were ready. Since the other runs had departed long ago, we struck out on our own for Pioneer Town. With Jimbo in the leed, we ended up going down a long dirt driveway to a dead-end. On our way back, the locals came out to waive at us. Back on the right trail, we had to stop since my throttle cable end broke. By now, the clouds had moved in, and it began to rain. Those large drops that you can walk between... Other than the sizzle each time one hit the exhaust as I was working on the buggy, not a problem and not enough to get anyone real wet. Also nice to see all the lightning rods (antennas) on most of the buggys with all the lightning around! So after a few minutes, we were on the road again. We got to a fork in the trail. Most of us took the easy run, but Jimbo's son took the triple black diamond hard run! We thought we had lost him, so we stopped. After a while, he comes motoring up the end of the hard run like it was nothing :D . We continued into Pioneer Town. Willie had some trans trouble where his trans locked in first. After a couple of good jolts on a rough road, it started to work again. In Pioneer Town, we stopped for lunch. Neat place. Lots of old western movie sets there. Since it was getting late in the afternoon, we headed back. At one point, we had a run in with a drunk motorcyclist. After a bit of discussion on proper trail ettiquite (SP?), we went on our way. You could smell the rain in the air and everything was damp, so very little dust. We stopped for a rest at a closed up mine. As luck had it, the motorcyclist returned with his friends. After further discussion, we were back on the road. Willie's trans acted up again, but we all made it back in time for the potluck. Another great potluck. We had about 45 to 50 people attend. As usual, more food that we could eat! Sunday, we went to the raffle. No prizes, but Winnie did say that the run would go again next year  . We went back to camp and just relaxed for the remainder of the day. All in all, everyone had a great time. Looking forward to doing it again next year.
