Wire Harness
Wire Harness
Any suggestions on where I can get a good wiring harness and fuse panel kit for the Manxter? Send me some links if you all have them. That would be great. Tires and wheels will be ready in 3 weeks. Hoping to have the Manxter body on the pan this weekend. Ready to start reading the Manual Bruce put together. Maybe by then I'll have most of the stuff done so we can bolt up the engine and tires and wheels and go. Patrick & Lori Manxter #60

We used a Watson's Streetworks VW harnesss. http://www.watsons-streetworks.com/vw.html It's a little pricy, but it has worked out well. Tom

I talked to Ron Francis at a recent street rod show about a VW harness. He says he has a harness that will fit perfectly, just give him a call when I'm ready for it. Here is his link. http://www.wire-works.com/

Patrick, I also used the same Watson Streetworks setup as Tom and Kathleen and have never been sorry about spending the little extra money on this part of the build. I looked at several other options before buying but always came back to Watson in the end because of quality and overall functionality with lots of room for expansion. Good schrematics and easy to install. Probably your best option all the way around if you are up for spending the money. Link provided by Tom and Kathleen.
There are a lot of choices out there. I personally like the newer style micro-fuse sized panels. They are very small and have a cover. Size is something worth considering. Personally, I am in a unique stuation with wiring needs. The wiring harness that came with my Subaru engine is actually built to make a sandrail run. It has the relays for the fan and fuel pump, all the guage hook ups including the wiring that would run to the gauges. Alternator hookup and ignition too. It actually has its own micro-fuse panel. Just add +12V and ground and go , kinda. The harness is beautifully made too wrapped in braided loom. (I love that stuff, much nicer than the hard plastic split loom). So, all I need is a basic harness for the lights more or less. I've said it before but if you get a Subaru engine from Steve Johnson there are quite a bit of extras that come with it. Here are some links. It's a Snap! They have 3 different models of micro-fuse panels. Many Cobra replica builders are using it with favorable reviews, very cost effective. About $130. http://www.itsasnapwireandcable.com Painless. Many choices. From standard size GM fuse blocks to micro. Available in various circuit sizes. I have used Painless before and had no issues. http://www.painlessperformance.com American Autowire. Some choices. I've heard of quite a few complaints from fellow Factory Five builders. http://www.americanautowire.com I Squared Engineering. Hold on to your socks and be ready to embrace the digital age. They have two systems. A fully buffered MOSFET system and one that is more conventional with relays. Costs more, but if you want the latest and greatest this is it. http://www.isqe.com EZ Wiring. Standard and micro fuse blocks. http://www.ezwiring.com Hoffman Group. Micro panels plus many interesting accesories. Their Zirgo fans are the best! Makes Spal look like garbage. I actually put a seized up Spal in the garbage and can come up with a 100 or so names of folks that have thrown a blade on a Spal. If their harnesses are built like their fans...they will be very good. http://www.thehoffmangroup.com/KeepItCl ... KICK.lasso Olli
I decided on the micro-fuse harness with all black wires from The Hoffman Group. http://www.thehoffmangroup.com/Keepitcl ... id=KICKBNC I will also get the ground kit from It's a Snap. Not really a "kit" as much as it is black wire with the word "ground" printed every few inches. The idea of going with the all black wires is so that they kind of disapear. This makes getting marked ground wires that much more important! http://www.waytekwire.com will be my source for the braided split loom and most likely Watson's for LED dash indicator lights. Olli
