Wow,
I just get one problem fixed then another pops up what fun!
I now have the car running and the seats in, I tried to move the car and when I try to shift into 1st or 3rd I get a bad grinding, but reverse
2nd and 4th are fine
(I do have an aftermarket shifter and a new clutch cable)
Cannot get trans into 1st and 3rd

You might just have to loosen the bolts for the shifter and move it around to see if it will engage the gears better. To get it into first and third better, slide the shifter to the rear of the car.

I have something from Gene Berg on how to align your shifter. Its rather detailed. Let me know and I can email you a copy. It may be on thier web site too.

In addition to the above, check the bolts on the transmission nose mount and the condition of the mount.

Ok this is just me being stupid, the problem wasn't the trans not going into gear, it was the cable clamp not holding the clutch cable in place, every time I pushed the clutch in it would slip a little more ahhhh! anyway readjusted the cable, tightened the clamp plus adding a second clamp
and I was able to drive it around the block, all gears working properly, thanks to all that responded I now have a dune buggy instead of a garage antique
