1600 dp intake question

Post by Gene-C »

hey guys, I am trying to get a '68 beetle 1600dp engine running for my buggy. The motor had a bugpack crossover tube with a holly 2bbl carb. The carb is trash so I bought a stock 1600dp crossover to replace the bugpack crossover with. Here's the problem. The bugpack crossover is 16 3/32" long. there was a small gap at both ends where the crossover connects to either intake. The stock crossover I bought is 17 1/2" long and will not fit. Are there different size crossovers on different year 1600dp? or do you think this motor has different heads than stock? I am about to cut the stock crossover to fit this engine but before I do something that drastic I thought I'd try to find out what the problem is. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Scott, It sounds like you are using aftermarket end castings. There is some overlap with an all stock dual port manifold. The center section of the manifold actually goes inside each end casting. The boots have one large end and one small end to accomodate the difference in size.

I tried that. Any harm in cutting the stock senter secrion? I am just trying to see if this engine runs right now but I dont want to cause problems later on if it does...

I'd be inclined to "make it fit".....

If you cut the manifold to make it fit I would use some Gates "Vulco Flex" hose in place of the VW boots to give the manifold a little extra support at the ends and keep from tearing the stock VW boots. You can get Gates "Vulco Flex" hose at any good auto parts store. Jerry...
