Replacement Steering Box

Post by Don Giovanoni »

I am thinking of replacing the steering box on my Siggy with the aftermarket box that many advertisers sell - I had adjusted the old one per the book but it is still pretty sloppy. 1. Does anyone have any experience with these replacement boxes? 2. How tough is it to change with the body on? Thanks guys. BTW, Just got back from the first Manx ride in a week or so (heat wave finally broke). As the early evening changed to twilight and then dark, the ride was GREAT, reminds me why I built it!

They are not hard to change. 2 bolts hold it on i think plus you have the steering shaft and pitman arm.

Don, If you are going to replace your steering box then I would suggest using a new TRW box. Have not had a problem with mine and the steering is precise. Just about any outlet stocks them for around the high $80.00 to $120.00 price depending upon supplier. Here are a couple of sources that I just looked at: http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp ... D415%2D061 $119.95 Pre 1966 also requires a new pittman arm to be installed. http://www.socalautoparts.com has NEW TRW Steering Boxes listed in the recent Hot VW September Edition for $89.95 Mail-Order: 562-633-4979 You might also want to check and replace the pittman arm and or the steering coupler while you are at it and don't forget to re-install the ground jumper on the steering coupler when putting things back together.

I have been very happy with the new TRW box I installed. It is easy to do on the Siggy. FYI - I originally had a urethane steering coupler, but I switched to a rubber one after I saw how urethane can break apart. No, the coupler never had a problem, but I have been less than impressed with other urethane items, such as bushings.

I will order a TRW box right away. The original VW box fooled me - I adjusted it per the book (with the wheels cocked) and it felt Ok before I started driving it. Well, the center ended up with the slop; off center it does feel fine (if you adjust the box in the center where the wear is the box will be tight when you turn it). Of course most of the time you are going straight and that is where the slop is. Oh well. Glad I bought that tie rod removal tool.
