More Manx II questions...

While I'm online I may as well as a few more questions. 1) My gas filler port was at the center of my hood, and had a screw off acces port (about 4" opening). I want to replace it with a flip top (Fiat) style filler that goes direct into the tank. Winnie suggested looking in some motorcycle catalogs. I actually ordered one from a marine supply co, but it may not do the trick - too long. Any suggestions on where to find a flip top filler that I can mount to my tank? 2) I am going for the clean, simple, "old red" retro look, and really like the Gates Cammando tires. I understand that Mickey Thompson offers an offroad tire that is much like these. Does anyone know how they will do on-road, and on the beach? Most driving will be on road. Any suggestion on the tire size? I will be running a 1641 with a stock IRS trans. 3) Wheels and wheels...I keep going over this and I will be doing stock wide-5 painted wheels in the front. Want to do a bigger tire in the back, again wide-5, painted, but wider rim. Any suggestions on where to get some of these rims and what size width would be suggested? Bruce actually gave me some sizes, but he said to use 14" wheels in the front and 15" in the rear. Could that be correct? Thanks again for the help and any photos would be great. With any luck, maybe I will have it on the road in the spring/summer of '08!

The flip top caps that are commonly used on buggies don't really "mount to the tank". Usually the cap mounts to the hood with screws and are connected to the tank by fuel filler hose and clamps. A short neck of 2" steel tube is welded to the top of the tank which the rubber hose is attached to. Usually the neck is welded at the top rear of the tank to get maximum capacity. http://www.cbperformance.com/catalog.asp?ProductID=1268 The 14 X 5 front and 15 X 8 rear wheel is the combination they originally recommended and what a lot of people used, basically the Manx looks good with a smaller diameter tire up front. In 1968 I used Armstrong Norsemans front and rear. There are a fewer 14 inch tires available now and if you're going to use it off road, ground clearance is important, so most people use 15" on the front.

Ed, If you are interested in the flip top gas cap like the one CairoManx gave you the link on I actually have one just sitting here and you are welcome to it for the cost of shipping. Just send me a PM and I would be glad to send it out to you if interested. Works well if installed upright like you would be doing on your Manx build but does not work very well when installing in on its side like I tried to do in my Manxter 2+2 under the hood so I had to go another route but it should work just fine for your project and you are welcome to it if interested.

Does anyone have info on the Gates Cammando tires? Or something like them? I picked up a gas filler like the one in the photo from a marine supply shop. Actually think it's the same one as in the photo. Will let you guys know how it works out. Painted the underside of my body this weekend with a mairne black epoxy paint. I'm happy with it. It's a really hard shell that bonds to the glass well. Much better than the black paint that was sprayed on it 35+ years ago. Thanks again for all the help! Ed

The Mickey Thompson Mini Mags are very similar to the Gates Commandos: http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/off- ... em=MiniMag They are not DOT approved, so it is not legal to run them on the street. Lots of people do, but I prefer not to give the cops a reason to impound my buggy! I had Mini Mags on the front of my rail buggy, and they were excellent in sand washes, rocks, and hard pack. It is a shame they are not street legal!
