In have the same extra clearance over the tunnel. I just stacked a few gaskets to seal it off

Sometimes the fiberglass tub will deform over time, especially if it has not been continuously fitted to a chassis. It could also have been molded on a deformed mold and thus not true to a standard Beetle pan to begin with. You can try incrementally tightening down on the gap sections over several days/weeks to close the gaps a bit, but you still run the risk of damaging the fiberglass/gel coat. Are the gaps small enough that you could use thick foam insulation tape to fill them? If both sides are down flat on the pan sides, once bolted down, the body isn't going anywhere.

Yes the driver and passenger side are completely flat on the pan. It has been off the pan for about 6 months. I don't remember there being a gap before it was removed. Id rather not stress the fiberglass since i just paid a lot of money to have it repainted.
