retro radio

Post by 90volts »

I think i have finally made up my mond about the direction the buggy will take. i'm going with the period look, early / mid seventies. i am looking to go with an 8track with am/fm. anyone else have one of these? i've never hooked one up so i just wanted to make sure there was no difference between makes and all that. i am guessing i can just use a ford/chevy/whatever right? they are pretty big so if anyone has one do they even fit in the buggy dash? alot of reinforcment needed? and of course if anyone has a working unit they would like to part with... i just want something that is in nice shape that works.did VW even make an 8track? haven't seen one on ebay.

Are you going for an in-dash unit or something that hangs underneath? In-dash stuff may be a bit hard to find as 8-tracks were on their way out when the in-dash radios were coming into vogue. I have a Pioneer Supertuner III(FM only) with 8-track(and its twin that has a cassette deck). Both still play great, but are underdash units and relatively heavy. The nice thing about the tuner is its large round dial. Much easier to see and more "accurate" than the typical slide rule dials. I suspect a search on Ebay will turn up one. I was right! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pioneer- ... enameZWDVW These are the exact same ones I have! I better check my garage for theft.

Jim, Talk about theft... I had those exact same units back in the '90's. Someone helped themselves to both players. They were mounted together on the "hump" of my 73 Comet... Mike. I have an in dash 8-trach player I plan to install in my clone. they are heavy. I would definatly support the unit from the back with a strap (like they used to do). A friend of mine has 100's of 8-track tapes. when the time comes, tell me what retro music you like and I'll try to get it for you.

I've been busting my hump to find a way to mount a concealed, weather proof system with small, state of the art speakers into my buggy. I would only consider it if I am able to take my Ipod with 10,000 songs or two weeks worth of music with me. It's funny how people are different. 8 track baby, I may have some REO speedwagon or Styx to donate to the cause. Edit: Looking at the ebay link, you should be able to pull down a few hundred channels of HDTV signal with a unit that size. Or at the least, talk to martians.

You could go real vintage. AM radio in the dash, FM converter and 8 track under the dash. I had a converter in my Mustang when I was a kid until I could afford an 8 track am fm.  Then you could get a cassette to 8 track converter. Sweet I see a lot of 8 track stuff at yard sales. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FM-CONVE ... dZViewItem

Years ago I had a 1978 Oldsmobile Holiday 88 that came from the factory with an indash 8 track player not to mention a console and bucket seats. I thought 8 tracks were obsolite years before that car was produced. Presently,I'm afraid to play any of my old 8 track tapes for fear of them getting eaten in the tape player. I know, I wouldn't cut a hole in the dash for an 8 track player bacause in short order I would run out of tapes (from the tape player eating them) after that I would have useless tape player in the dash. :D

I think i put in a junk 8 track and then put in a hidden alpine unit with a remote . sounds great and you don't see it.

see, i'm thinking a decent 8track that can be amped a bit with a concealed amp. the reason it has to be FM is because i have an fm convertor for the ipod, so while it looks retro (and i'll def play 8 tracks- still have several) i'll be able to play the ipod through the stereo. see, i actually thought about this a bit LOL :D

VW 8 track....

Post by Dune-Buggy-Archives »

My '67 bug was ordered with a 8 track. I kept it when I sold the car. It's on a shelf in the garage. I thought the same thing about putting it in the Manx when it's done. It is just so large and heavy I am not sure. I have a really cool article on putting in an 8track and speakers in little plastic enclosures at the base of the windsheld mounts in the Manx kick panel area. I think it's in Sport Buggies magazine from 1968. I will have to look this weekend. I'v been looking on ebay at RCA, Motorola, Radio Shack ect... not Chevy Ford Pontiac...facotry units they go too high. The aftermarket ones would have been installed in a buggy anyway not a GM factory job. Keep it retro

AM Radio

My bug has the original radioshack radio AM only that was put in by my grandfather. It matches the shag carpet.
