high rpm idle
i know i must have sand in something or knocked something loose. was a bit rough on the buggy at the beach. but was good all the way to the last 200 feet or so. at which point , all the sudden my idel rpm jumped up to almost 3k. everything is fine other than a high idle speed. and its not always at 3k. if i let of the clutch it sometimes stays at 3k , sometimes drops to 2k or so, sometimes closer to to normal (1k -1200). sometimes if i rev the engine up to 4k or so real quick it will go down to normal. any ideas? 99cent tuneup helo maybe? figured that was for no /low idle but i don't know. but other than that, we're driving all over the place having a good time. even got the wife in it today and she was impressed. much better ride than the last time she was in it and didn;t like it. (may be that she's just not pregnant and bouncing around this time though!

it was good at the start of the day though. but it looks like it is the throttle linkage at the carb. it isn't returning completely. i tried blasting it with water on both sides of the carb to make sure there was no sand in there. if i drive like normal the idle is at around 2k now. if i go back to the linkage at the carb and push it forward it goes about another 1/4 inch and my idle goes down to 1k like normal. rusty and needs taked apart and replaced? just readjust the throttle cable and the set screw that goes up against the choke piece and live with it? wd40 soak? i knew i shouldn't touch the carb itself since all was fine before. thanks for pinpointing that...and you guys run in the sand all the time!? no wonder you know all the tricks. i couldn't believe all the sand that got stuck everywhere!
Mike, Just make sure the cable doesn't seem tight when the throttle plate is closed (choke all the way open). You might need to loosen the cable just a little, but also be sure you are getting wide open throttle when the pedal is depressed all the way. The linkage should NOT actually touch the stop on the carb at wide open throttle, there should be a small gap. I have noticed that the throttle operation can be a little stiff after I have had a carb rebushed. I just spray a little Tri Flow on the bushings every day for a few days and that usually frees it up. You might get good results doing the same.
