Nelson, when you were stationed at RAF Mildenhall do you ever remember the flooded road at Welney?? directions > out of the air base on A1101 past Kennyhill and Littleport & Welney is about 5 miles from Littleport. Every year this road floods & motorists get stranded,, last winter the road was shut down for weeks. Crazy thing is, I was told by an old fella last year (he runs a garage just one mile from Welney) that during WW2 the Americans stationed here offered to put up a bridge to span that section of road,,,, but it was refused by the Limeys as they were worried about an invasion
,,,,,, not sure how much truth in this crazy story but I cant see how that bridge could have been a benefit to invading troops,,,, did they not listen to Churchill when he said ''We will fight em in the air, on the sea & on the beaches'' ?? Guys, if the offer of that bridge is still on I would really appreciate it, as it cuts miles of my trips down to Kent

[/QUOTE] I've taken that road many times. I had a friend that lived in Wimblington. From Welney I'd go via March Rd, Padgett's Rd, 16 Foot Bank, then Manea Rd. I would have thought the A10 would be quicker for you if you live in Kings Lynn.

Not sure if the A1101 is flooded at the moment, but the water was very high when I passed by last Monday. Dave, I take it you made contact with the Larc owner then?? Any more info on that project, and what plans he has for it??.

Nelson, they shut the 1101 today at the 'Five Bells' pub end for Remembrance Day,,(Poppy Day) events. Do you have a public holiday in USA for 11 11??. The water is VERY high at Welney right now,, but its not covered the road yet. I will try & get some pics for ya next time it floods for old time sake.
We really have two Rememberance Days. We used to call 11 11 Armistice Day, until World War II happened, now its Veteran's Day. Its to honor anyone who served. We also have Memorial Day, which is at the end of May, which is to honor the soldiers killed during all the wars. I recall a real nice pub and a good place to eat which I think was along the A10 outside Downham Market. On the east side of the road, by itself, with lots of tables out front on the grass and a kind of glass conservatory kind of thing on one end. Do you know the one I mean?

BTW the A1101 at Welney is flooded right now, 6 cars got stuck Wednesday evening
