Soliciting Creative Ideas

Post by rzeller »

I?m looking for some ideas on how to address a rubbing/scratching problem I have. My side curtains are attached to my top by a zipper that runs parallel to the top?s edge. The front hoop of my roll cage touches the zipper right at the bend of the top edge of the hoop. What I have when I remove my top are scratches on both sides of the front hoop (at the top bends). It?s not real bad, but it bothers me. I?ve been trying to figure out some kind of protector (short of wrapping the roll bar with padding) that I can put on the corners of the front hoop that would protect the paint. One idea I had was a small piece of a bicycle tire tube (around the whole roll bar on the corner). Unfortunately I have ?feet? welded to the bottom of the hoop (where it attaches to the chassis) that I can?t get the tire tube over. Another idea I had was a protective film attached to the corner. I didn?t try it, but I figured the zipper would just rip it up. Any other creative ideas out there? You can see where the zipper rides on the bar in the picture (top left corner of the picture). Image Thanks for the help. Bud

Snow ski and water ski shops sell a clear self adhesive film to stick on the top of skis to protect them from scratches. I think it would work great for what you need. When it gets too scratched up, peel it off and stick on a new piece.

I would suggest using the 3M clear bra material. It is a clear, transparent, "plastic" that is self adhesive. It is easy to apply. Have a spray bottle with a dilute mixture of baby shampoo and H2O A spray bottle with a very dilute mixture of rubbing alcohol and H2O a squeege Make sure the surface is clean. Then spray the body surface on the dilute H2O/ baby shampoo. Peel the back off the 3M film and apply it to the part of the vehicle you want to protect. The H2O/shampoo mixture lets you slide the film around until you get it where you want it. Once you have it where you want it, spray the film with the dilute H2O/rubbing alcohol mixture. Use a squeege to push the water and air bubbles out from b/w the body and the film. And Viola!! You have applied a protective layer that will last for several years! I removed mine using a hair dryer to melt the adhesive but have since found a great adhesive remover made by 3M. Hope this helps... Kathleen

what type of paint is it? whatever my bar was done with originally really got scrtched up easily.even by the rubbing canvas of the full top. when i redid it last summer i got a suggestion to use the epoxy appliance paint and haven't had much of a problem since. when i do get a scratch (kids are all over it- it's bound to happen :D ) i just touch it up with a quick spray. tijuanacustoms carries the clear protective stuff also. he's east coast i believe.

Thanks for the suggestions. Who would carry the 3M material? Any ideas? I'll look around town, but I might have some trouble finding a ski shop (snow) at the beach :D Although, there should be some water ski places around. As for the paint, it was just painted with rattle cans :-( My roll cage is on a very long list of things I want to re-do and get powder coated. I might try the appliance paint idea. Thanks. Bud

How big of an area do you need to cover? I got a sample of the 3M's competitors film at a car show. I need to find it and being a sample, I'm not sure how much they included. I'll PM you over the weekend when I get a moment to look.

3M film

I googled "clear bra" and was able to find a link to the 3m film. There was a link for a store locator. From there, I started making phone calls for the best price. Kathleen

Thanks again to everyone. Dave, I'm only going to cover the outer edge of the corners. I'm guessing a strip 2x5 inches on each side would cover it. I look forward to getting you PM. Thanks, Bud
We make what you need. Check out our scuff gaurds. http://tijuanakustoms.com/____What_We_Offer/_____Dune_Buggy_Items/_____dune_buggy_items.html
Tom, I've been looking at your buggy project section on the site,,, can you tell me, is that buggy kit called a ''Boss Bug'' from the PPI company?? . Maybe it says it someplace on the site but I couldn't find anything. Never seen one of these buggy kits in the flesh myself but they got a good write up from DB&HVW's back in the 60's if what I read is true. Nice stuff :hello:
