Manxter Hood Prop Ideas

Post by Tom-Kathleen »

We are looking for some ideas on how to keep a Manxter (or KickOut) hood open. We know about the screen door spring idea where it holds things open when extended and then you fold it to close it. But we are looking for some more "elegant" ideas. Show us what you have. Thanks! Tom & Kathleen.

Use a gas strut like Oliver did on his Subi-Manxter

I have see 1/8" aircraft cable also used.
Be sure to put a couple of twists in it so it will coil up when you close the hood

Thanks Joe, I forgot about Ollie's car. I went digging through pictures and this is what you were talking about. That is an elegant solution.

That even looks like Ollie's car.

Does anyone know what size these Rams are, or what vehicle they are off of possibly?

I would guess that the gas struts are 40# or 60# and have a travel of 12".

Your closest NAPA auto parts store can look them up, once you figure out what is needed.

Keep in mind that you need to control what the hood does when it is in the open position.

What do you mean by control what it does?

I just saw this thread....and I went and did some digging in the files.

I found the invoice for the gas struts. I bought them through a company called Engineered Components Inc. engrcomp.com .

The description lists them as # 1589EK. I did a search and found them cross referenced at another site. Much cheaper than what I paid......

If you look at the interchange listing you will find #1589EK. I went with these as they are very low pressure at only 20 lbs of force. You might find that ones of similar length and stroke could have 2X or 3X that force as they are made to hold up heavy lift gates made from metal and contain heavy glass.

The mounts for the ball studs, I just cut, and shaped them from aluminum angle.

How did you go about getting the angle right Ollie? Trial and error?

Trial and error...the lower pivot point is located on that little bit of body pad. What was important was the forward travel. I wanted the hood to stop just before the front bumper tube.

Hey Guys,
I've been envious of this hood prop since I saw it when I picked up my kit!
How did you secure the tabs to the hood and what did you use for the tabs?
Thanks for blazing a path ;)
Thanks,

Tsfr. I have all the stuff to do mine. I will post pics once I get it all sorted. The plan is to use a double stick tape to get the position right and then I will fiberglass them onto the hood. I will probably then cover in raptor lining.
