I am wondering what are the best exhaust to put on a buggy for horsepower?

Years ago I read a comparison test on the Manx Sidwinder exhaust along with a few others and the Sidewinder came out on top.

Anyone else concerned about how the Manx exhaust goes from the collector to the muffler. That is, it doesn't taper down to go through the muffler. The end of the muffler for all practical purposes is stuck inside the collector. Has to be major disruption to the flow at that point. I wish I had mine off so I could take a picture of what I'm talking about. :confused:

For straight out power at full throttle the best is a small separate system with a hot dog on each side, but they are very noisy. For best road use, a 4 into 1 Baja system like the Sidewinder is best for good power, fuel economy, tolerable noise levels, and smooth and efficient running at highway cruising speeds.

For making the most horsepower just look at what the racers are using. All are using some kind of merge collector system that follows the firing order of the engine. The Manx Sidewinder system is Ok (it is compact, up out the way, and looks cool, kinda of noisey) but there are better systems for power. Don't be oversold on to big of header pipe size. 1 3/8in , 1 1/2 works well unless you have larger than a 2 liter engine.

I think the test was done with the muffler installed. I replaced the original muffler on my Sidewinder with a Camco Fab muffler with SuperTrapp discs on it and it's nice and quiet....considerably more quiet then the original muffler. With the original muffler installed it still was nowhere near as loud as the "dual cannon" style exhaust.

I will vouch for the effect of the SuperTrapp on the Manx Sidewinder. I had Rob cut the curved tail pipe off the glass pack and TIG weld a 3" disk assembly onto the end so the exhaust is straight-through. I ended up using 7 disks and the stock 127.5 main jet. This cut the exhaust noise in half and the engine has more power than before. You can also tune the power band by adding or removing disks. Replacing the glass pack that came with the Sidewinder with the Camco Fab muffler is also a good idea. I made some people angry because I cut up an "original" reproduction part.

My Sidewinder exhaust is the original chrome Manx Sidewinder and I get alot of flak about installing a different muffler on it and all I did was bolt it on. I tell them I had to replace the muffler because where I drive the buggy, the buggy requires a spark arrestor and I didn't throw away the original muffler. I can't see any problem with modifying something if it is still available and especially if improves it's function. I attached a picture of the muffler installed. Image
