After market speedometers

Can you run an after market MECHANICAL speedometer on a vw?? or do you have to run electric with an adapter? DO they make compinsators for mechanical gauges?? thanks

Any good speedometer shop can supply you with a calibrated gearbox that goes in the speedo cable to correct the speedometer accuracy.
