Jr one BIG thing to consider is leg room. Do you know what size the wheel is? I am 6'1 and had to go to a smaller wheel to accomidate my legs. (always got knee stuck when I shifted to 2nd gear) The 14" wheels were to dang big. I now have a 12" wheel and was actually thinking about going to a 10". Have you looked at these wheels? http://www.empius.com/catalog/empi2005_pg219.html or these http://www.mooneyesusa.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=242

I have an 11" diameter wheel. It makes it easier to climb in and out but I think its a little small for good steering control. I think 12" to 13" is probably right. There also needs to be a VW adapter for the model you're picking unless you're planning on fabricating a column. The other variable is the length of the adapter and depth of the wheel's dish which will determine how close or how far the wheel is from the driver. As far as the style of wheel, I think you should get whatever you like best.

What that shallow of a dish, I might be worried it would be too close to the windshield.

Theres no problem for leg room when getting in and out of the buggy if you have a quick release but when shifting that might be a problem

Aside from the diameter being correct, I think the steering wheel has to look great. Remember it is one of the few interior items that catches somone's eyes when they look at the buggy.

I have never had a problem with wheel size before. The first build up of my buggy I ran a GM column with a 14" wheel and I never had a problem with anything And i am 6'1". My seat sliders go back really far so size really isnt an issue for my as much as finding a wheel that I like enought to put in my buggy. Thank for the input

If wheel size is no issue then that is one nice looking wheel Jr. Is that a 14"wheel?

I like the looks of the "billet" wheels, but my favorite for driving fast are the ones with a tightly sewn leather grip. They still look pretty racy, just not as shiny. I almost bought one of the 3 hole billet wheels for my sand buggy, but I mostly steer that with the brakes in a panic... Get the one that looks cool, you can always change back.

I have a billet aluminum wheel in my 33 Ford the face of the wheel is leather wrapped. I can't imagine how hot that sucker would get sitting in the direct sun. There are times I have to turn the air conditioning vent to blow on the wheel for 10 minutes before I can hold onto it long enough to drive the car.

the California Clipper.....

Jeremy, Looked at your photobucket pics. Nice buggy. Quick question or two for you. First why are you planning to use the big heavy non breakaway column for the buggy? That big thing scares me to think about what it could do to your chest in accident. The late VW columns are collapsable, that one looks rigid. Second, are you mounting that rail buggy gas tank in the rear seat area?? Why not put a VW gas tank under the hood and not have the fuel right behind your head?? Now the good news. You don't have to call it a Manx Clone anymore. You have a California Clipper. Congratulations! Image Nope, not a Sandwinder like alot of people think. The Sandwinder has a Manx Tail. Thsi one has a flipped up spoiler tail. This litterature is available too, if your interested. Email me at 247vws@charter.net Take care, John Shepard [QUOTE=jr_vw2]I have never had a problem with wheel size before.
